Rosa Bonheur in Bordeaux

Decidedly, Rosa Bonheur has the wind in her sails and it's no coincidence. On the occasion of the bicentenary of her birth, the Museum of Fine Arts in Bordeaux presents until September 18 the first retrospective dedicated to the artist since the one presented in 1997 in Bordeaux, Barbizon and New York. This exhibition allows the public to (re)discover the power and richness of the works of this free and atypical woman, whose popularity extends to Great Britain and the United States...

Rosa Bonheur comes from a family of artists and her work is the result of her tireless efforts in observing animals. Drawing inspiration from her daily life, but also from her travels in Auvergne, Nivernais, the Pyrenees and Scotland, she has shown an insatiable curiosity for the diversity of species and their ecosystems.

She was also fascinated by the wild beauty of America's great outdoors, even though she had never been there. Thus, she represented Buffalo Bill and all the actors of the Wild West Show in 1889.

The exhibition bears witness to her extraordinary vision of fauna and flora, which she immortalized in small formats as well as in monumental works...

A presentation that comes as a counterpoint to the one currently in progress at National Museum of Wildlife Art in Wyoming.
