Engraving the light at the Musée Marmottan Monet

From July 5 to September 17, 2023, the Marmottan Monet Museum in Paris presents an exceptional collection of engravings, belonging to the Swiss Foundation William Cuendet & Atelier de Saint-Prex. Through more than a hundred masterpieces, the route will show an ensemble from the 15th to the 21st century: Dürer, Rembrandt, Piranesi, Goya, Corot, Manet, Degas, Bonnard, Vuillard... the works of the greatest masters will be compared with creations by contemporary artists.

By hosting this exhibition devoted to the history of printmaking and its techniques, the Marmottan Monet museum opens its doors to one of the means of communication which was, from the 15th century, one of the most popular until the day when the newspaper industry and photography came to supplant it.

Artists like Odilon Redon, Edgar Degas or Claude Monet were not insensitive to the new methods of restoring light effects using copper or stone. A particular section of the exhibition is devoted to rotogravure, the printing process which offered late 19th century photographers the possibility of engraving light – at the very moment when Impressionism set out to paint it. .

This exhibition aims to reflect the diversity that makes up the collection of the Fondation William Cuendet & Atelier de Saint-Prex (deposited at the Musée Jenisch Vevey in Switzerland). Its course is divided into 7 sections where themes, functions and processes of the art of engraving are successively approached.
